THE AUBREY ARRIVAL ROUTES
Three ways to arrive at Aubrey Halls, Rye
We believe the journey is just as important as the destination.
Aubrey Halls was never designed to be arrived at in a hurry. The roads that lead here — winding through countryside, along ridgelines and beside the sea — are part of the experience. For those joining us, we’ve curated three of our favourite routes into Rye, each offering a different perspective, but all rewarding when taken slowly.
01 — The Aubrey Arrival Drive
London → Rye via the Surrey Hills & South Downs
For those travelling from London, this is the route we always recommend.
Leaving the city behind, the road opens as you pass into the Surrey Hills before joining the A272 — widely regarded as one of England’s great driving roads. From here, the journey becomes fluid and engaging, opening out across the South Downs before meeting the coast at Hastings. The final stretch follows the shoreline along the A259, before turning inland towards Rye and arriving through its cobbled streets and historic facades.
Recommended Roads:
A3 (London → Guildford)
A25 (Guildford → Dorking → Surrey Hills)
A24 (short link south)
A272 (Petworth → Midhurst → Haywards Heath area)
A22 (brief connector south)
A21 (towards Hastings)
A259 (Hastings → Rye coastal stretch)
Allow: 2.5–3 hours
Best driven: early morning or late afternoon
02 — The Coastal Classics Run
Rye → Seven Sisters → Brighton
For those staying on, or simply not ready for the drive to end, the coastal road offers something altogether different.
Heading west from Rye, the A259 traces the edge of the sea through Hastings and Eastbourne, before rising towards Birling Gap and the Seven Sisters cliffs — one of the most striking landscapes in the South of England. With long views, open skies and the ever-present sea, it’s a route that encourages you to slow down, stop often, and take it all in.
Continue on to Brighton for lunch, or simply enjoy the journey before returning to Rye.
Recommended Roads:
A259 (Rye → Hastings → Eastbourne → Seaford → Brighton)
Optional: B-road detour to Birling Gap / Beachy Head (worth it for views)
Allow: 2–3 hours with stops
Best driven: late morning into sunset
03 — The Romney Marsh Loop
Aubrey Halls → Appledore → Camber Sands → Rye
Closer to home, and perhaps our favourite of all.
The Romney Marsh loop is quieter and more understated — a network of open roads and vast skies that feel almost untouched by time. Leaving Rye towards Appledore, the landscape opens into expansive marshland where traffic is rare, and the horizon stretches endlessly.
Returning via Camber Sands, where dunes meet the sea, the route offers a final moment of stillness before arriving back in Rye.
Recommended Roads:
A268 (Rye → Appledore)
B2080 / local marsh roads
Military Road (across Romney Marsh)
A259 (Camber Sands → Rye)
Allow: 1–2 hours
Best driven: early morning or golden hour
